Why Read This Guide?
Private aviation into Costa Rica is simple when you know the rules. This article walks you through every step—from choosing an airport to clearing customs—so owners, charter brokers, and crews avoid surprises and maximise vacation time for their guests.
1. Which Airports—and Which Terminals—Should I Use?
Primary Airports of Entry (AOEs):
- San José (SJO / MROC) – Costa Rica’s only dedicated General Aviation Terminal (GAT) is operated by Universal Aviation. Offers expedited CIQ and private lounges.
- Liberia (LIR / MRLB) – Staffed Fixed-Base Operator (FBO) with full ground handling services and luxury transfer access.
Secondary AOEs:
- Tobias Bolaños (MRPV) – Closer to downtown San José; suitable for light jets.
- Limón (MRLM) – Caribbean-side access with limited hours.
Remote Strips (e.g., Tamarindo, Nosara):
- Not official AOEs; require special paperwork and temporary importation.
Why It Matters: Choose the arrival point that minimizes onward travel to your resort.

2. Do I Need a Landing Permit or Slot?
- Landing Permits: Not required for private or charter ops. However, Prior Permission Required (PPR) is mandatory for parking. Request through your handler. Approval format: Tail Number + Date.
- Slots: Rarely needed unless there is a major event or during peak holiday periods. Best to secure your arrival window early for Dec–Apr high season.
3. How Smooth is Customs & Immigration (CIQ)?
| Airport | Clearance Flow | Typical Time |
|---|---|---|
| SJO / GAT | CIQ desks inside private terminal; passengers wait in lounge while luggage is screened. | 10–15 min |
| LIR / FBO | Handler escorts through fast-track lane in commercial terminal. | 20–30 min |
Note: Our team can pre-fill arrival cards and coordinate on-board immigration clearance for heads of state or medical evacuations.
4. What Ground-Handling Services Can I Expect?
At both Universal Aviation locations (SJO & LIR):
- Ramp access
- Flight-plan filing
- Jet A-1 and Avgas refueling
- Lavatory and oxygen servicing
- VIP & crew lounges
- Catering
- Door-side luxury transfers
Additional Services We Can Arrange:
- Pet handling & SENASA clearance
- Onboard floral arrangements
- Cabin disinfection
- Last-mile helicopter transfers to Peninsula Papagayo or Osa Peninsula

5. Can My Aircraft Overnight? Is Hangar Space Available?
- SJO: Only 8 parking stands. During high season, overnight stays often denied via NOTAMs. Crews may need to reposition aircraft to Panama or Managua.
- Hangars: No transient hangars at SJO. MRPV has limited space for light jets.
Tip: Plan and budget for repositioning in advance.
6. What Are the Operating Hours and Curfews?
| Airport | Normal Hours | After-Hours (On Request) |
| SJO | 06:00 – 21:00 LT | 24h with prior coordination |
| LIR | 07:00 – 18:00 LT | 06:00–06:59 & 18:01–23:59 |
7. How Does Costa Rican Weather Affect Private Ops?
- Sept–Oct: Heavy rain and morning fog can delay ops.
- Dry Season Afternoons (esp. at LIR): Crosswinds may complicate landings; earlier arrivals preferred.
Recommendation: Plan for extra fuel and flexible ground transport.
8. Can I Fly the Jet to Domestic Strips?
- Must temporarily import the aircraft (7–8 business days; max 22-day stay).
- All documents must be original and in Spanish.
- Failure to depart on time triggers import tax on full hull value.
Pro Tip: Charter a local turboprop instead for internal transfers.
9. What Documentation Should Passengers & Crew Prepare?
- Passengers: Valid passports for full stay (U.S./EU). Some nationalities need 6-month validity.
- Crew: Licences, medical, insurance, GenDec, airworthiness docs.
- If importing aircraft: Notarized Power of Attorney required.
Best Practice: Submit manifest 48h in advance for smoother CIQ.

10. How Much Lead Time Do Services Need?
- High Season (Nov–Apr): Request PPR, parking, and catering 2+ weeks out.
- Low Season: Usually 3–5 business days sufficient.
- Special Equipment: Fuel uplifts and tow bars for G650/Global types should be booked 24h in advance.
