Family relaxing beside a pool at Nekajui in Costa Rica

A $100K Family Vacationin Costa Rica

Rainforest, volcano and Pacific. Eight days, three destinations.

Three landscapes. Eight days you will remember.

A waterfall hidden in the rainforest. A morning rafting through a river canyon. Your children learning to make chocolate beneath Arenal, followed two days later by lunch aboard a yacht on the Pacific.

That is the holiday we would build with a $100,000 family budget in Costa Rica: a journey through places that feel completely different, with exceptional homes, private guides and flights making the route possible.

Start beside the Pacuare River for two nights, move to Arenal for two nights, then finish with three nights on the Papagayo coast. This is seven nights and eight calendar days for two adults and two older children. The experiences lead the plan; the accommodation changes with the landscape.

The version below comes to approximately $104,500 for the whole family, excluding international airfare. The journey can be tailored with different villas, a slower pace and more time for the things your family enjoys most.

The itinerary: rainforest, volcano and Pacific

Day 1 · Into the rainforest

Your first glimpse of the Pacuare landscape comes from the air: mountains folding into one another, forest stretching across the hills and the river cutting through the green below. Plan an early arrival in San José to connect with your private flight to Pacuare Lodge.

At the lodge, have lunch, settle into your villa and spend the afternoon beside the river. After the international journey, this first day needs very little organizing. Take a short walk with a naturalist if everyone has energy, or enjoy the pool and the sounds of the forest from your terrace.

Dinner brings the family together again before your first night in the rainforest. Nights 1 and 2: Pacuare.

Day 2 · A waterfall, a picnic and the forest at your pace

Go out early with a private naturalist, while the forest is waking up. Follow the trails toward a waterfall, stopping when something catches the children's attention: a bird above the canopy, a line of leafcutter ants, a plant with a surprising use. The guide has time to turn a sighting into a story.

We would arrange a chef-prepared picnic lunch, with the route, setting and menu planned around your family. You get the pleasure of eating in the landscape without having to carry a day's worth of logistics yourself.

For teenagers who want a more active morning, choose a canyoning or canopy adventure instead. Keep the afternoon easy at the lodge. After dark, a guided night walk offers another way to see the same forest, searching for the small creatures that become active when the daylight disappears.

Day 3 · Raft through the canyon, then unwind beneath Arenal

The move to Arenal starts with one of the week's biggest experiences: a guided descent of the Pacuare River. The water alternates between lively rapids and quieter stretches where you can look up at the forested canyon. Your family paddles together, following the guide's calls.

A private raft gives your family its own shared adventure. The route includes Class III–IV rapids, so we match the outing to your children's ages and abilities and the river conditions. A road transfer is also available.

After changing into dry clothes, an SUV connects you to your onward private flight toward Arenal. Arrive with the rest of the day open. A warm mineral pool, a view toward the volcano and dinner close to home are plenty after the river journey. Nights 3 and 4: Arenal.

Day 4 · Walk above the forest, then make chocolate

Explore Mistico's hanging bridges with a private naturalist. The bridges take you from the forest floor into the treetops, where your guide can help you look for birds, monkeys and the details you might otherwise walk past. Keep the pace unhurried, with time for photographs and questions.

After lunch, turn to something the whole family can taste. At a cacao experience near La Fortuna, follow the journey from pod to chocolate: the fruit around the beans, the transformation through roasting and grinding, and the pleasure of making the finished drink or chocolate yourselves. We would arrange a private session for your family.

Return to Nayara for the late afternoon. The warm pool, terrace and dinner close to your accommodation give this full day a relaxed ending. Arenal deserves time for both its landscape and the little discoveries along the way.

Day 5 · Trade the volcano for the Pacific

After breakfast, take the next private flight toward Guanacaste. The scenery changes again as you leave the Arenal region and approach the Pacific coast. A waiting Expedition completes the connection to your coastal residence.

This afternoon belongs to the sea. Have a light lunch, go down to the beach and let everyone settle into the new setting. There is time to swim, enjoy the pool and decide which part of the terrace will become your favorite spot.

For dinner, arrange a private chef at the residence or choose one of the resort restaurants, depending on the home you select. Fresh fish, local produce and an early dinner can be exactly right after the change of scenery. Nights 5, 6 and 7: the Papagayo coast.

Day 6 · Your own yacht and a day on the water

Board a privately chartered 105-foot Azimut for the day. Discuss the route with the captain, then leave the schedule ashore. Cruise the coast, stop to swim where conditions suit, and enjoy lunch aboard with room for everyone to spread out.

Some families want as much time in the water as possible. Others love the changing views, the open deck and an afternoon with a book while the children enjoy the boat. The point of chartering privately is being able to shape the day around that mix.

The yacht in this budget has a published full-day charter of $8,000, including catering and taxes. The specific departure point and route are arranged around your residence and the day's sea conditions. Return for a quiet evening on land.

Day 7 · Catch a wave, linger over lunch, celebrate the week

Let the family's interests decide the final full day. A private surf lesson can be a wonderful shared challenge, with the instructor choosing the location and timing for your ability and the conditions. If surfing does not appeal, make it an easier kayaking or beach morning instead.

Stay out for lunch or return to your residence for a long afternoon by the pool. There is no need to cross another region today. Enjoy the coast you have come to see.

Finish with a dinner planned around your family: a chef-prepared meal at home, a favorite bottle for the adults and dishes the children will enjoy. You now have a week's worth of stories to tell around the table, from the river canyon to the first wave somebody managed to stand up on.

Day 8 · An easy departure from Liberia

Have breakfast and depart by private SUV for Liberia Airport. Flying home from LIR completes the route without returning across the country. Your pickup is planned around the flight and the property's checkout time.

Different homes for different parts of the journey

The accommodation should make each destination more enjoyable. These villas and residences offer different ways to enjoy the journey, with space and sleeping arrangements chosen around your family:

  • Pacuare: Jaguar Villa for its river setting, or Linda Vista and Canopy Villa configurations that suit your sleeping arrangements. Here, the forest and river are the reason to stay.
  • Arenal: Nayara Tented Camp's private residences, Casa Paloma and Casa Dana, for a generous home with warm pools and shared living spaces. The Grand Tent and Family Tent are smaller alternatives for families who prefer less space.
  • Papagayo: choose from a two- or three-bedroom Nekajui, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve Residence, or a Four Seasons Canopy Villa or residence, with private outdoor spaces and access to the resort’s dining and activities.

For the coastal stay, we have budgeted around $12,000 per night for a premium villa or residence. Prices vary by property, season and the services included. Our Papagayo guide explains the resort settings.

For a longer coastal stay, the Flamingo 9BR Ocean View Estate offers another way to finish the journey. With a five-night minimum in November, it suits a longer stay on the coast.

How the family budget comes together

The experiences make the week memorable. The largest costs are the accommodation and the flights that connect three regions comfortably. Here is an approximate budget for the whole family:

These estimates are for a family of four traveling in November. Your final price depends on your dates, accommodation and chosen experiences. International airfare, travel insurance and gratuities are additional.

Choose smaller accommodation, fewer private flights or a shorter yacht charter and the total can come down. Choose a larger residence or festive dates and it can rise. We would spend where it improves your family's week.

The best version starts with your family

This three-stop route suits an active family with older children. With younger children, we would usually simplify the moves and replace the rafting departure with a suitable alternative. For a family that wants more beach time, extend the coast and shorten one inland stay.

You do not need a $100,000 budget to plan a trip with Bespoke Costa Rica. Start with the experiences you most want to share, then choose the homes, guides and transport that make them work. Our family-vacation guide can help you explore other directions.

Tell us your dates, your children's ages and what excites them. Waterfalls and wildlife? Surfing and the ocean? Food, adventure, or time together somewhere beautiful? We can shape a complete journey around those interests.
