Private day trips · Peninsula Papagayo

From Pacific mornings to volcanic canyons

Breakfast overlooks the Pacific. A few hours later, you are looking into a volcanic canyon, watching a waterfall disappear into turquoise water, or listening as your guide picks out a monkey's call in the trees. By evening, you are back on your terrace, with a different Costa Rica to talk about over dinner.

That is the appeal of a well-chosen day trip from Peninsula Papagayo. Your resort or villa already gives you beaches, pools and plenty of reasons to stay put. A day outside the peninsula should add something you cannot get by walking downstairs: an active volcanic landscape, a proper river adventure, Guanacaste's food and traditions, or the rainforest around Arenal.

Our first recommendation is Hacienda Guachipelín, where forest, waterfalls, canyon adventures and naturally heated pools can fill an exceptional day. Beyond it, the right choice depends on the people travelling: accomplished surfers want a different morning from children learning to stand on a board, and a private helicopter excursion creates a different opportunity from a drive into Liberia.

Bespoke Costa Rica arranges pickup from your resort or villa, private guiding and the day’s activities.

A day away from Papagayo can begin in a completely different landscape.

Choose the day for the experience you want

  • For an active family or group: Guachipelín's canyon canopy and river adventures, followed by lunch and hot springs.
  • For volcano scenery and wildlife: Las Pailas with a private naturalist, Oropéndola Waterfall and a warm-water finish.
  • For swimming and beautiful scenery: a waterfall-focused day with fewer scheduled activities.
  • For local life: Liberia's historic streets, regional food and cultural programming matched to your dates.
  • For surfers: a private Witch's Rock outing for suitable ability, or professional coaching at a beach chosen for the lesson.
  • For a complete change of landscape: La Fortuna by helicopter, with a private ground itinerary around Arenal.
  • For a quieter wildlife outing: Santa Rosa's dry forest or the wetlands and river landscapes around Palo Verde.

Give each outing its own space in the holiday. A relaxed day at the villa after a full adventure day is often a better choice than booking demanding departures back to back. Travelling well includes knowing which opportunities to leave for another visit.

Hacienda Guachipelín: the adventure day we would put first

The landscape changes as you leave the coast for the foothills of Rincón de la Vieja. At Hacienda Guachipelín, the attraction is the whole setting: a working-ranch identity, forest trails, rivers cutting through volcanic rock, places to swim and an adventure operation that lets you experience the terrain in several different ways.

Our preference is to reserve a full day and build it around your group's priorities. The published Private One-Day Adventure Pass combines the canyon canopy and rappelling experience, Río Negro tubing, hot springs, volcanic mud and lunch; horseback riding is described as optional in that private program. It gives the day a coherent framework and a dedicated guiding arrangement.

Ziplining and waterfall canyoning make a memorable pairing

The canyon canopy course is more interesting than simply travelling between treetop platforms. The river canyon is part of the adventure, with ziplining and elements of climbing, rappelling and bridges bringing you close to the rock and water.

For guests who want more, we particularly like pairing ziplining with the dedicated waterfall-canyoning experience. That is a separate activity: ropes, waterfall rappels, climbing and a much more direct encounter with the water. It deserves time in the schedule, rather than being mistaken for the rappelling already included in the canopy course.

Bespoke Costa Rica works with the property team to arrange the combination and order of activities. If canyoning is your priority, we shape the rest of the day around it. A lunch you can enjoy and an unhurried hot-springs finish are worth more than completing every available activity.

Ask us for a complete private Guachipelín day from your resort or villa. We coordinate your pickup and return, the chosen pass, private guiding, transport between the property's activity areas and the lunch arrangement with the management team. Tell us what you most want to do; we bring the pieces together in one itinerary and quote.

Tubing, horses or mountain bikes: choose your kind of movement

Río Negro tubing is an energetic river outing, with rapids and an individual tube bringing you into the current. Choose it for guests who want an active water experience. It is a different proposition from a quiet float or a gentle swim, so the group composition matters.

Horseback routes offer another way to move through the property, including outings towards Las Chorreras or Oropéndola. Riders' experience and comfort should shape the route. For cyclists, Guachipelín also has forest singletrack with beginner, intermediate and advanced options. Even the introductory ride involves real riding; it is better planned as a chosen activity than a casual extra squeezed between tours.

We establish individual activity requirements before reserving. A child's admission category on a day pass does not mean every activity is suitable for that child. Tell us ages, riding experience, swimming confidence and anyone who prefers to sit out one part of the program; we can plan a day that gives everyone something to enjoy.

A different Guachipelín day: volcano trails, wildlife and a waterfall picnic

If your ideal morning involves binoculars rather than a harness, choose the nature-focused version. Rincón de la Vieja National Park's Las Pailas sector brings you into the volcanic landscape on foot: forest gives way to steaming ground, bubbling mud and other geothermal features that make the mountain's energy visible.

A private naturalist adds much more than directions. There is time to stop when something moves in the canopy, understand the change in vegetation and look properly at the birds you might otherwise walk past. Monkeys and other wildlife are part of the region's appeal; a guide helps turn an encounter into something you understand.

Guachipelín's Private One-Day Nature Pass provides a particularly appealing starting point: guided Las Pailas, Oropéndola Waterfall with a private picnic, and Río Negro hot springs, with private transportation between locations. Bespoke Costa Rica coordinates the approach from your Papagayo accommodation and the complete reservation around that program.

The national park and the hacienda are distinct visits. Park admission needs to be arranged separately from that pass, and Las Pailas normally operates Tuesday through Sunday. We reserve the appropriate date and entry rather than assuming a daily adventure booking also includes the park. The attraction here is the permitted geothermal and forest trails, not a climb to the active crater.

Oropéndola, Las Chorreras and Victoria: give the waterfalls time

For some guests, the most memorable part of the day is taking off their walking shoes and getting into the water. A waterfall-focused outing makes that moment the purpose of the day, with time for the approach, photographs and a swim where the local team judges conditions suitable.

Oropéndola: the dramatic canyon setting

Oropéndola drops into a turquoise pool framed by the Río Blanco canyon. The enclosed setting gives it a different feeling from an open river beach: rock walls, moving water and forest create a place you want to pause in. It is a natural pairing with a Las Pailas morning, or a principal stop on a gentler nature day.

Las Chorreras: twin falls and a river-pool pause

Las Chorreras has two neighbouring cascades and a pool held within volcanic rock. Choose it for a different composition of water, stone and forest. Arriving with enough time to enjoy the place is part of the experience; ticking it off on the way to another appointment misses the point.

Victoria and the Río Negro landscape

Victoria adds a taller waterfall and a different stretch of the Río Negro canyon. Guachipelín's full waterfall expedition connects several falls, lunch and thermal pools. For guests who prefer less walking or fewer stops, we can instead coordinate a more selective route.

These are mountain rivers in the volcanic foothills, surrounded by the landscapes that make Rincón de la Vieja special. Water levels and access determine where swimming makes sense on the day. Your guide makes those decisions locally while the driver connects the different areas of the property.

A proper lunch, then hot springs among the trees

Lunch is a welcome change of pace after a morning outside. Guachipelín has a food story worth enjoying: Guanacaste traditions, ingredients from the region and the ranch, and open-air settings that belong to the landscape.

La Hacienda Restaurant serves Costa Rican and broader dishes in a traditional hacienda setting. Rancho Don Elías offers a buffet-style lunch and a strong sense of Guanacaste's rural identity. There is also Nekajui Garden, a separate garden dining concept with regional ingredients and wood-fire influences. We establish the restaurant and included meal when arranging your day, or reserve a different dining experience around its service hours.

Tell us about dietary requirements before departure. The right meal arrangement is easier to make with the kitchen in advance, especially when several activities need to fit around it. Our Costa Rica food guide explores more ways to make local ingredients part of your travels.

Finish at Río Negro hot springs. Naturally heated water fills pools built beside the river, with woodland paths and hanging bridges connecting the setting. The pleasure is the contrast: cool shade, the sound of the river and warm water after using your legs all morning.

Volcanic mud is part of the experience, and there are changing facilities and lockers at the entrance. Keep a dry change of clothes for the return journey. Bespoke Costa Rica coordinates the day's final pickup so you can enjoy the soak and return to the coast comfortably.

Liberia: a local lunch and a closer look at Guanacaste

Liberia deserves to be more than the place you pass through after landing. Its historic streets and older houses reveal a different side of Guanacaste from the contemporary resorts along the peninsula. A walk with someone who can explain the buildings, the region's traditions and the everyday rhythm of the city gives the outing substance.

Build the visit around a good local lunch. Costa Rican cooking has room for a satisfying casado, fresh juices and regional corn-based traditions, with the actual restaurant chosen around your interests. Guests who enjoy markets, architecture and food can give Liberia its own leisurely outing rather than treating it as a hurried shopping stop.

It can also work as a carefully chosen stop on another day, but we would not routinely add an extended city visit after an already full adventure program. The value of private planning is being able to choose the right pace.

If you want to experience a local celebration, ask Bespoke Costa Rica what is happening during your stay. Town festivals, cultural performances and holiday programming can create a more personal connection to Guanacaste when the timing fits. We check the actual event and setting before building it into your plans.

Surfing: a Witch's Rock day or your first proper lesson

Witch's Rock for a surf-focused outing

Witch's Rock, also known as Roca Bruja, is one of Guanacaste's defining surf settings: a broad Pacific beach, the offshore rock and the protected landscapes of Santa Rosa. For experienced surfers, a privately coordinated outing can be a highlight of a Papagayo stay.

Plan the day around the surf rather than a fixed sightseeing timetable. The guide, boat arrangements, conditions and ability of the guests determine the program. Bespoke Costa Rica coordinates the departure and necessary arrangements with the operating team, including the connection from your accommodation.

This is an appropriate choice for guests who already surf and want a day built around the waves. It is not where we would automatically send a family for a first lesson simply because the name is famous.

Private coaching matched to the guests

For beginners, a private lesson should begin with the right beach, boards and instructor. The aim is confidence and enjoyment: learning the movement, understanding the water and having the time to improve without keeping pace with a large group.

For returning surfers, coaching can focus on technique and wave selection. We arrange professional instruction and match the Guanacaste location to the guests' ability and the day's tide and swell. Tell us whether everyone wants to surf, or whether some people would prefer beach time while the lesson takes place.

La Fortuna by helicopter: change worlds for the day

The most dramatic change of scene is a private helicopter excursion towards Arenal and La Fortuna. You leave a coastal holiday for a landscape of rainforest, volcano country and thermal water, then return to the same room or villa that evening.

Start by choosing what you want to do after landing. A private forest walk, hanging bridges with a naturalist or a waterfall visit gives the day a clear purpose. Lunch and a hot-springs experience can complete the program when the route and available time support them. Choosing one principal activity is more enjoyable than racing through a long list.

Bespoke Costa Rica coordinates the flight, connection to an operator-approved departure point, receiving vehicle, guide and destination reservations. Your helicopter is one part of a complete day; the reception and movement on the ground matter just as much.

A scenic volcano flight is a different experience from landing for a day in La Fortuna. We recommend the latter when you want time in the forest and at the thermal pools; a scenic route suits guests who chiefly want an aerial perspective. Aircraft planning follows the party size and baggage, with weather and daylight shaping the operation.

Explore our Costa Rica helicopter experiences and La Fortuna luxury itinerary for more detail on those possibilities.

Santa Rosa or Palo Verde: choose a different kind of nature day

Santa Rosa combines tropical dry forest with the history of La Casona and Guanacaste's ranching landscape. It suits guests interested in the country as well as its wildlife. A private guide helps connect the forest, the historic setting and what you see along the route. The historic visit and the remote surf coast are different programs, so we choose the appropriate sector rather than treating the whole park as one easy circuit.

Palo Verde and the Tempisque landscape offer another contrast: wetlands, riverbanks and birdlife. A well-planned nature outing gives you time to watch rather than continually move. A boat-based program and a visit through the park's terrestrial entrance have different access arrangements; we select the route around the experience you want.

Choose these for a day centred on observation and interpretation. They offer something different from another beach outing, and can be particularly rewarding for travellers who enjoy birds, photography and patient wildlife watching.

How we make the day feel seamless

The important details begin at your accommodation: which resort or villa, where the vehicle should meet you, how many guests are travelling, and the space needed for bags and activity equipment. A departure from a private residence needs the same careful coordination as a hotel pickup.

At Guachipelín, the day continues across a large property. We work with the management team on guiding, activity reservations and transport between the relevant areas. Private transportation to the entrance alone is not the whole arrangement.

We also connect the small decisions that determine the day: when to eat, where to change, which guest needs a gentler option, whether park admission is required and what time you would like to return. The selected pass, canyoning additions, private guiding and meals are brought together in one proposal.

Bring closed footwear suited to the activity, swimwear, sun protection and a dry change of clothes. Your final plan comes with the specific requirements for the experiences selected, so you arrive ready to enjoy them.

If you are still choosing your base, our Papagayo resort guide and Papagayo villa selection help with that part of the trip. Our private transportation service connects the days around it.

Tell Bespoke Costa Rica where you are staying, your available dates and what excites your group. We can arrange a complete private day with the right balance of discovery, adventure and time to enjoy being somewhere different.

Arrange your day in three straightforward steps

  1. Send us your hotel or villa, preferred dates and group details. Include the number of adults, children's ages and the experiences you like. If you are undecided, tell us whether you prefer adventure, wildlife, swimming, surfing or local culture.
  2. We put the complete day together. Bespoke Costa Rica recommends the right combination, checks arrangements with the operating teams and sends one proposal showing private transportation, guiding, selected activities, meal arrangements and applicable admissions.
  3. Approve your plan and we coordinate the reservations. Once confirmed, you receive your pickup details, activity requirements and the day's schedule. We coordinate with your accommodation and the local teams through your return.

These arrangements are available for a single excursion as well as several days of experiences. For surfing, we connect the instructor, chosen location and transfers; for La Fortuna, the flight and receiving ground itinerary; for Liberia and the national parks, the route, private guide and relevant visits.
