If you want a simple rule that saves hours, here it is.
Costa Rica has two main international airports: Liberia (LIR) and San José (SJO). Both have direct international flights, and both work. The key is choosing the airport that matches your route inside Costa Rica so you do not waste half a day in unnecessary driving.
If your departure city offers direct flights to both airports, use this guide to choose the right one based on the destinations you actually want to visit.
If your trip is mainly Guanacaste and the North Pacific, fly into Liberia.
If your trip is mainly Central Pacific, South Pacific, Caribbean, or the Central Valley, fly into San José.
Choosing the right airport is one of the easiest ways to make your trip feel smoother, faster, and more relaxed.
If you are deciding where to base your trip, see our Best Places to Visit in Costa Rica guide.
Quick answer
Fly into Liberia if you are going to:
Papagayo, Playa Hermosa, El Coco, Tamarindo, Flamingo, Conchal, Las Catalinas, Nosara
Fly into San José if you are going to:
La Fortuna and Arenal, Jaco, Los Sueños, Quepos, Manuel Antonio, Dominical, Uvita, Osa, Monteverde, Puerto Viejo, the Central Valley
If you are visiting multiple regions, consider an open jaw flight. Fly into one airport and fly out of the other.
Liberia airport
Liberia is the best airport if your trip is focused on Guanacaste and the North Pacific. This includes the places most people search for when they think beach luxury and easy logistics: Peninsula Papagayo, El Coco, Playa Hermosa, Tamarindo, Flamingo, Conchal, Las Catalinas, and Nosara.

Typical transfer ranges from Liberia Airport:
Papagayo, El Coco, Playa Hermosa: roughly 30 to 45 minutes depending on exact location and traffic
Tamarindo and Flamingo: roughly 60 to 90 minutes depending on exact location and traffic
Nosara: often closer to two to three hours depending on route and road conditions
Liberia is the cleanest option if your first base is Guanacaste. It reduces first day stress and keeps your trip from starting with a long drive.
San José airport
San José is the best airport for most itineraries outside Guanacaste. It is the main hub for routes that go toward La Fortuna and Arenal, Monteverde, the Central Pacific, the South Pacific, and the Caribbean side.

Typical transfer ranges from San José Airport:
Jaco and Los Sueños: roughly 1 to 2 hours depending on traffic
Quepos and Manuel Antonio: roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours depending on traffic
La Fortuna and Arenal: often around 2.5 to 3.5 hours depending on exact location and traffic
Puerto Viejo: often around 4 to 5 hours depending on route and traffic
San José Airport can feel busier than Liberia because it has more overall traffic, especially during peak travel dates, holidays, and weekends.
Santa Teresa and La Fortuna notes
Santa Teresa can be similar driving time depending on route and conditions, so your flight availability and itinerary sequence matter more than the airport alone.
La Fortuna and Arenal are commonly routed from San José, but we can build the trip around either airport depending on your full plan.
Open jaw flights
This is one of the best upgrades for time. If your route is beach plus rainforest, you do not always need to return to the same airport.
Examples that often make sense:
Arrive Liberia and depart San José
Arrive San José and depart Liberia
It depends on where you start, where you end, and your flight options.
VIP arrivals and fast track
If you want the smoothest arrival, we can arrange VIP airport support such as meet and greet and fast track style handling where available, plus premium private transfers from the airport to your hotel or villa.

If you want this planned end to end, see our Costa Rica Travel Planner Guide on how custom itinerary planning works.
If flights do not match your ideal plan
Do not stress if the only flights you find are into the “wrong” airport. We can still make the itinerary work.

In some cases, internal flights or helicopter transfers can reposition you and save hours between regions. For time-max travel, see our guide to Book Costa Rica Air Charters: Private Flights and Helicopter Transfers.
Airport transfers from Liberia and San José
Private airport transfers are available from both Liberia Airport and San José Airport to all major tourism regions in Costa Rica.

High season note
During high season and holidays, you can expect more traffic on the roads and longer lines at the airports. This is exactly when choosing the right airport and having transportation arranged in advance makes the biggest difference.
