Costa Rica has two main international airports: Liberia (LIR) and San José (SJO). Both have direct international flights, and both work. The key is choosing the airport that matches your route inside Costa Rica so you do not waste half a day in unnecessary driving.
If your departure city offers direct flights to both airports, use this guide to choose the right one based on the destinations you actually want to visit.
Start with your first hotel or villa, your final destination and your international flight options. Then compare the complete arrival: flight schedule, road transfer and any onward domestic flight. A cheaper ticket is not necessarily the better choice if it adds a long transfer or an overnight stop.

Liberia or San José? The short answer
Fly into Liberia for Guanacaste and the North Pacific: Papagayo, Playa Hermosa, Playas del Coco, Tamarindo, Flamingo, Conchal, Las Catalinas and Nosara.
Fly into San José for the Central Valley, Central and South Pacific, or Caribbean: Jacó, Los Sueños, Quepos, Manuel Antonio, Dominical, Uvita, the Osa Peninsula and Puerto Viejo de Talamanca.
For La Fortuna, Monteverde and Santa Teresa, compare both. Your exact property, road or ferry route, flight schedule and next stop matter. These destinations should not be assigned to one airport without looking at the itinerary.
If you are visiting multiple regions, consider an open-jaw flight: arrive at one airport and depart from the other.

Driving examples are Google Maps snapshots checked October 29, 2026, not guaranteed travel times. Use your hotel or villa address, not just the town name: traffic, rain, road works and ferry schedules can change the journey. Flight arrival time is not the same as the time you leave the airport.
Liberia Airport: Guanacaste and the Pacific coast
Liberia is the best airport if your trip is focused on Guanacaste and the North Pacific. This includes the places most people search for when they think beach luxury and easy logistics: Peninsula Papagayo, El Coco, Playa Hermosa, Tamarindo, Flamingo, Conchal, Las Catalinas, and Nosara.
For a Papagayo resort stay or a Tamarindo luxury villa, compare LIR flights first. Confirm the actual property location before choosing a vehicle or estimating the arrival journey.
For a short road transfer, a private vehicle can be simpler than adding another flight. For a longer connection, compare door-to-door time rather than the flight duration alone.
San José Airport: the Central Valley and beyond
San José's Juan Santamaría International Airport is in Alajuela. It is a practical arrival for the Central Valley, Jacó, Los Sueños, Manuel Antonio, Uvita and the Caribbean side. For more remote destinations, compare a private road transfer with an onward domestic flight.
Check the connection airport as well as the timetable. An onward flight may require moving between terminals or airports; immigration, baggage collection and the ground journey still need time. Do not book a tight connection based only on the published landing time.
La Fortuna, Monteverde and Santa Teresa
La Fortuna and Arenal
La Fortuna and Arenal are commonly routed from San José, but we can build the trip around either airport depending on your full plan.
Compare both airports against your exact Arenal hotel and international flights. If your trip also includes Papagayo or Tamarindo, it can make sense to arrive in one airport and leave from the other.
Monteverde
Look at the approach road, your lodging and the next destination. A town-to-airport estimate does not include every mountain property. Avoid planning a long arrival drive without considering the time your international flight lands.
Santa Teresa
Compare the complete ground route, including the ferry if your chosen route uses it. If flying onward, confirm the arrival airstrip and the final transfer to your accommodation. Neither an international airport nor a domestic airstrip is the villa itself.
Arrive at one airport. Leave from the other.
An open-jaw itinerary can remove the need to drive back across the country just to catch your flight home.
- Rainforest first, Guanacaste last: compare an SJO arrival for Arenal, continue to Papagayo or Tamarindo, then depart LIR.
- Guanacaste first, rainforest last: arrive LIR, stay on the North Pacific, continue to Arenal, then compare the return journey to SJO against LIR.

Do not stress if the best international flight lands at the airport farther from your destination. In some cases, an onward domestic flight or helicopter transfer can save time between regions.

Is Liberia or San José better for La Fortuna?
Both can work. Compare the road route to your hotel, your international flight schedule and where you are going after Arenal. The best airport for the whole itinerary is not always the one used in a standard package.
Can I fly into SJO and leave from LIR?
Yes, if suitable flights are available. An open-jaw booking can avoid returning to your arrival airport after a multi-region trip.
Should I choose the cheaper international flight?
Compare the difference in airfare with the transfer cost, travel time and any extra overnight stay. Saving on the ticket can be worthwhile, but not if it undermines the trip you want.
